David Lieske
David Lieske´s understanding of images is based on the approach. It is an approach to picturesque opportunities that are constantly driven by the desire of being able to show everything on canvas. But every canvas has its limits. Painting has a totalitarian aspect to it which Lieske traces.
The motif is arrogant, it does what it wants, just like birds that cannot easily be caught. This is exactly what David Lieske is interested in. The whole can overcome the artist and take on a life of its own.
No risk, no painting! That is what the young artists is currently dealing with. Something that might not be feasible in one painting might be feasible in the next or the one after that. For him, every work is a movement towards everything. The canvas provides a time frame made of fabric on which colour riots, competes with the will to form and leaves a positive feeling of discontentment.
In the next painting, there is both everything and nothing. What is meant to prevail is picturesque honesty. It is not about the mere display of craft. David Lieske´s pictorial worlds can be expressive, formal, playful or silently observing. The artist compares it to ploughing a field. Painting is a large field and David Lieske is just at the beginning of it. However, he might already be able to anticipate the various possiblities. After all, is is about giving rise to something clear out of the old medium of painting. (Claudia Cosmo)
