Myriam Quiel
Myriam Quiel´s pictorial worlds seem to completely take place in our reality. Elaborate in the minutest detail, the artist shows us a world of things whose components are well known: we see toys, technical equipment, furniture and everyday objects.
Still, the nursery atmosphere of the paintings is treacherous. In the face of the ambiguous dramatic art of the images, our perception changes rapidly. While the works entice us with countless details, the silence and rigidity of the scenes are unsettling. The focus is directed to absurd constellations of inanimate objects whose array raises questions. Puppets, masks and costumes, which are often distorted and disfigured, are thoroughly arranged in a grotesque staginess. In her paintings, Myriam Quiel creates a world between reality and fiction, melancholy and horror, academic painting and popular culture.
